  1. When will I know whether I've been selected to move forward and have a site visit?

    Those programs selected to have a site visit will receive a call and email by August 1st, 2008.
    Applicants not selected will be notified by August 1st via email – with a follow-up letter by mail.

  2. Do I need to submit a budget?

    For the full proposal phase, you are being asked to submit a detailed budget and budget narrative which should follow the grantmaking on line system instructions.    There are 5 periods including: 

    1. 6-month planning
    2. 6 months  (2nd half of the first year) 
    3. 2nd year
    4. 3rd year
    5. 4th year

  3. How can I check the status of my proposal?

    You will receive an e-mail from the Grantmaking Online system confirming that you have submitted your proposal successfully from info@buildinghealthyteenrelationships.org. If you have a question you can also, send an e-mail to info@buildinghealthyteenrelationships.org or call Lisa Sohn (ext. 14) or Debbie Lee (ext 11) at (415)252-8900 re: any programmatic questions.  If you have technical difficulties please contact Tim Asher at ext. 26 or Genti Droboniku at ext. 20 at the same number.  Please be sure to include the name of the applicant institution and contact information in your communication.

  4. What is required of Building Healthy Teen Relationships grantees?
    • Grantees will be expected to meet the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's requirements for the submission of a final narrative report and financial reports.
    • Grantees will also be expected to meet benchmarks over the course of the initiative. These must be met for continued funding.
    • 15-17 finalists will be invited to participate in a site visit which will be scheduled for a date between August 8-29, 2008.  When you submit you proposal on July 8th we ask you to submit your site visit date preferences.   There is also a site visit preparation Web Conference scheduled for August 4, 2008 – 11am-12 PST / 2-3pm EST.  Please save this time.
    • In year one, grantees will be expected to participate in an Annual Grantee Meeting and a 2 day training meeting facilitated by the Family Violence Prevention Fund. In subsequent years there will be yearly meetings and other opportunities for grantees who face common challenges to share their expertise, knowledge and experiences. Activities will also include conference calls and on-line collaboration and other meetings. The first grantee meeting will be January 8-9 2009 for your 2 lead staff. There will also be a training session March 4-6, 2009 for 5 of your leading staff and other personnel. Please save these dates.
    • Grantees will work regularly with the NPO and RWJF on implementation. Grantees will be asked to be involved with the development and distribution of materials, tools and publications that are a result of the initiative.
    • Grantees also will be expected to participate in an evaluation of the Building Healthy Teen Relationships program. The Foundation will undertake an overall evaluation of the Building Healthy Teen Relationships initiative, which will focus on effective prevention strategies, key questions about potential sustainability and spread of each site's improvement efforts and the initiative's overall contributions to informing the policy debate and guiding the design of effective policy and environmental solutions to preventing relationship and sexual violence among youth. All grantees, as a condition of accepting grant funds, will be required to participate in such an evaluation. Please see section on the evaluation for more information which will be posted by June 16th at the latest.

  5. Can I submit a full proposal?
    Only those who completed a brief proposal and were invited to proceed to the next phase can submit a full proposal.

  6. When will these grants be awarded? When will we be notified if we have been awarded a grant or not?

    Successful applicants will be notified by September 15, 2008 and awarded by November 15, 2008.

    Applicants not selected will be notified by September 15, 2008 via email and then later by mail.

  7. What happens after the proposal is submitted? How will my proposal be evaluated?

    The grant review process is rigorous to ensure fairness and integrity. In fairness to other applicants, late proposals will not be accepted. All complete proposals will be reviewed for eligibility, and then sent to expert reviewers for review.  By August 1, 2008, sites will be chosen for site visits.  Site Visits will occur from August 8 to August 29, 2008. Sites will be informed of the award by September 15, 2008.

  9. Will I receive specific comments on my proposal after a decision is made?

    We are unable to provide individual critiques of or comments on proposals not selected for funding.

  10. What is considered to be eligible for matching funds?

    The match can be either "hard cash" or in-kind. Examples of in-kind match are allocated staff time of the core partnership members, space and supplies. Hard cash can come from a variety of sources, such as the applicant institution, the partner(s), other foundations, and public agencies. In all cases, the funds should be specifically committed to this project. Funds cannot be from the tobacco or alcohol industries.

  11. What happens after I submit my full proposal?
    If your project is selected, we will schedule a site visit.  You should then be sure to attend the Site Visit Preparation Webconference on August 4, 2008 – 11am-12 PST / 2-3pm EST .  Your site visit date will be scheduled based on the site preferences you submit to us when you submit your completed proposal.  Please be sure to block these dates off on your calendar!

  13. Do I need to submit a budget narrative at this time?

  14. How does the grant proposal process work?

    Proposals must be submitted through the RWJF Grantmaking Online system. This full proposal stage is by invitation only.  It includes the submission of a full proposal narrative (not to exceed 15 pages using 12-point Arial font, double-spaced). In addition, an Executive Summary, Biographies, Organizations Partner Contacts, 1 page Work Plan, Site Visit date preferences, Up to 10 Letters of Support/Commitment, Additional Collaborating Partner Contacts, Budget (worksheet) and budget narrative.   (Please see specific instructions on the RWJF Grantmaking Online system regarding each of the application materials.)

  15. Can we submit other attachments to the proposal besides those listed above?

    Please submit only those documents that are required, as outlined in the RWJF Grantmaking Online system.  However, if you have curricula, promising practices and corresponding evaluation results that you would like the National Program Office and Evaluation Team to consider for use in this initiative, please send them to the Family Violence Prevention Fund as soon as possible, as a separate mailing from your proposal.

  16. Is there a page requirement for the full proposal?

    The narrative of the full proposal must be no more than 15 pages, double-spaced using 12-point Arial font.  Additionally, there will be an Executive Summary, Biographies, Organizations Partner Contacts, 1-page Work Plan, Site Visit date preferences, up to 10 Letters of Support/Commitment, Additional Collaborating Partner Contacts, Budget (worksheet) and budget narrative.  See instructions within the Grantmaking on-line system for restrictions and template for these documents.

  17. Must all proposed programs work in the school setting?
    No. As long as you are able to have a base population of 2,000 youth between the ages of 10-14.  We hope to have some communities working in schools, others focused in out-of-school settings and some in both.

  18. There is a "surveys" line item in the budget form. Could you clarify what costs would be appropriate for this line item?
    This budget form is a standard form used by the Foundation.  You do not need to allot funding for survey costs.

  19. What is the application deadline and late submission policy?
    The deadline is 3pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, July 8, 2008.  To be accepted for review, your proposal must be completed and submitted by the deadline.  To be fair to all applicants, RWJF enforces a strict deadline policy.

  20. How will I know that my proposal has been successfully submitted?

    There are three ways to confirm your proposal was successfully submitted:

    1. You will see a screen confirming your submission.
    2. If you registered with a valid email address, you will receive an email message confirming your submission.
    3. Log in to the Grantmaking Online system with your applicant ID and password.  Go to your Home page.  If you have successfully submitted your proposal, a message will appear in red at the top of the Home page stating that your proposal has been submitted.

    NOTE: Once you have completed all requirements, you must return to the home page of the Grantmaking Online system to click on the blue CONTINUE button to gain access to the SUBMIT button.

  21. How can I check on the status of my proposal once it is submitted?
    We expect to receive many proposals, all of which must go through the same review process. If you have a question about a specific proposal, please send an e-mail to info@buildinghealthyteenrelationships.org. Please be sure to include the name of the applicant institution, the principal investigator and contact information in your communication.
